In August 1871, the Board of Managers of the American Institute invited Whitman to deliver a poem at the opening of their 40th anniversary exhibition, offering the poet a fee of $100.00 plus travel and lodging expenses. This poem was published in an edition of 2000 loose-leaf copies most of which were sold or distributed by Whitman directly; 300 were bound in cloth covers by Roberts Brothers for public sale. Price:
